1 Part Gathering Space

Project Overview: The Community Movement Commons, anchored by the Neighborhood Birth Center, is a unique collective of social justice non-profits. Located in a 10,000 SF, two-story building in Nubian Square, CMC unites organizers, community members, midwives, and healers. In 2021, several non-profits, including the Neighborhood Birth Center and Center for Economic Democracy, envisioned a social justice hub in Boston. They hired CoEverything to find a location, leading to the purchase of 14 Winthrop St. in 2023. Since then, we’ve organized various events and initiatives for design, fundraising, neighborhood outreach, and governance support.

“Co” Highlights:

  • Solidarity model in philanthropy to support Boston’s only Birth Center

  • Circle-self-directed governance structure among partners: Neighborhood Birth Center, Center for Economic Democracy, Matahari Women Workers’ Center, Sisters Unchained, Resist, and Movement Sustainability Commons

  • Unique capital stack design involving foundation grants, individual donations, impact investment lending, and a plan for New Market Tax Credits

Location: 14 Winthrop St, Roxbury MA 02119.

Team: MASS Design Group, Janey Construction Co, Wright Collective
